A revenge scheme involving artificial intelligence has left a young woman from Assam reeling after a fabricated explicit clip bearing her likeness went viral. The incident first drew widespread attention when the fake recording appeared on multiple social media feeds, seemingly showing the face of Archita Phukan in an intimate scene. Yet, following a thorough forensic examination, police have confirmed that cutting-edge deepfake software-not actual filming-produced the disturbing footage. The individual identified as its creator, her ex-boyfriend, is now in custody facing charges that include harassment and tech-based abuse.
The matter came to light when Phukan lodged a police report claiming that an obscene video using her face was circulating on WhatsApp, Telegram, and dozens of smaller apps. In only a few hours the clip traveled faster than local authorities could warn users, overwhelming Phukan with anxiety while also damaging her personal and professional image.
After receiving the victims complaint, the Assam Police opened an investigation. Forensic analysts examined the footage and confirmed that deepfake technology was used to superimpose her face on another persons body. Cybercrime specialists then traced the videos digital signatures and pinpointed the womans ex-boyfriend as the source. Police officers noted that he had planned the entire episode as revenge after their breakup.
