Free Electricity Scheme in Bihar: 125 Units from August 1, 2025

Patna, Bihar

Bihar's state government has just unveiled a welcome plan for home power users. From August 1, 2025, every household will receive the first 125 units of electricity each month, free of charge. The move is intended to ease the financial burden on poorer and middle-income families feeling the pinch of rising energy bills and inflation.

The rule was passed during a cabinet meeting in Patna on Tuesday. Energy department staff later confirmed that millions of customers statewide will now benefit from no-cost power.

Who Will Benefit?

Officials state that only low-tension domestic customers are covered, meaning every rural and urban family with a basic household connection. If a household uses 125 units or less in a month, it pays nothing on that bill.

Households that exceed the 125-unit mark will be charged only for the extra power at regular rates. The government hopes this sliding scale will encourage careful and efficient use of electricity across Bihar.

State's Electricity Policy Gets a Boost

Bihar is rolling out a new energy policy aimed at making power both easier to access and cheaper for everyone. In recent years, the state has almost electrified every village, yet tens of thousands of homes, mostly in farms and small towns, are still concerned about the cost.

To help, officials state they will reimburse the bill for the first 125 units each month. The hope is that families remain honest about the legal metered supply, pay on time, and fall behind on debts less often. At the same time, the plan aims to build trust between users and the state-run grid.

Automatic Adjustment, No Extra Paperwork

Perhaps the best news for customers is that they need to do nothing to claim the free units. There is no form to sign, no desk to visit. Once a month, the power office simply checks the meter and credits the bill if usage remains at or below 125 units.

Take a typical example: a household uses 120 units in August. The bill shows zero, and everyone cheers. Next month they turn on a cooler, the meter reads 140, and now they pay for every last unit.

Why 125 Units?

The state settled on a 125-unit limit after studying how much power rural and low-income city families actually use each month. By selecting this number, officials hope the assistance goes to those who need it most.

In Bihar, the typical village home consumes about 80 to 120 units every month, so the rule should benefit numerous families under the free-electricity programme.

Political and Public Reactions

Feedback has been mixed. Many people welcome the change, saying it eases bills at a time when finances are tight, while others worry the plan could deplete state funds in the long run.

Opposition figures are also sceptical; they question how the power boards will cover costs if fraud goes unnoticed and demand transparency regarding the checks in place.

Government spokespeople insist the state will pick up the tab and that accurate billing, plus fewer unpaid meters, will offset the impact over time.

Conclusion

Starting August 1, 2025, families in Bihar will receive the first 125 units of power each month for free. This initiative should improve monthly budgets for millions, and since there is no heavy paperwork, almost anyone who uses that much electricity can participate. The plan demonstrates that the government is prioritising people.

State officials are already setting up the new system, and friendly advertisements and local meetings will be launched well before the start date so that everyone knows how to utilise the benefit.
