It is a news of 2025 when a massive network outage caused millions of Reliance Jio users across India to lose network connection in the evening of July 6, 2025 in most major cities. In Mumbai to Delhi, Bengaluru to Kolkata, customers complained of entire loss of mobile signal, were unable to make calls and their mobile data were impaired. It started out at about 7: 00 PM IST on Sunday and reached its peak at 10: 00 PM, consequently leaving users with a sour taste in their mouth and issuing an outpouring of complaints on social media platforms where hashtags such as #JioDown became a nationwide phenomenon.
The outage hit mobile and broadband as well as JioFiber networks. Mic of an outage monitoring service, more than 11,000 complaints were registered in just few hours, and 81 percent of users had problems with a lack of signal. Some other people had slow mobile data or none at all, with users of JioFiber having dead connections. It was a very common problem and operations were being hampered as people could not call, use the internet or even make a digital payment. One of the users complained about inability to pay a restaurant bill because the signal disappeared abruptly, demonstrating the impact of the outage in reality.
It contributed to frustration of the users due to the time when it was disrupted (peak hours of the evening). Numerous people resorted to social media and posted screenshots of their communication devices that displayed empty signal bars and no connectivity notifications. Cities such as Hyderabad, Gujarat and Rajasthan which are known to have high customers also complained of the same leading to a conclusion that the outreach was not restricted to one area but experienced in various places. Other users even assumed that there could be some cyberattack, but no source could officially claim it.
It is not the first time when Jio had to struggle with such challenges. Another system shutdown occurred in Kerala on 16 June 2025, where an excess of 12,000 users experienced problems within a brief period. In that case, 56 percent of complaints were on mobile data and signal loss made up 29 percent of the complaints. The Kerala outage was later blamed by the company on a fiber cut in Tamil Nadu, which was solved after a few hours. But in the case of the outage that occurred on July 6, Jio did not speak even a single word; no formal announcement was made by the company regarding the cause of the outage and when services will be restored. This communication gap fanned another wave of discontentment, where users were demanding openness and more prompt solutions.
The outage also expressed the issue of reliability of the largest telecom network in India. Although Jio has a name of good services concerning 5G, the users noted that they could work only with 4G or even drop out. Customer care lines had collapsed as some even said it was like it was crashed or it crashed down. Posts in various social media tagged the official accounts of Jio and requested the company deal with the problem as soon as possible. One of the users in Ahmedabad said that the user had no signal since 8:15 PM, on both their jio Sim cards, and requested immediate repair.
Previous incidences of outage have witnessed Jio giving compensation, including 1GB data freely, which most of its users said they could not get. This has been part of the history which increased the doubts on how this company responded to the recent upset. With India moving to the digital-first future, connectivity is very important, and outages such as this point out the hurdles even the top telecom operators must come across.
In the meantime, the users should opt to reconnect to the network using simple troubleshooting techniques, including restarting their devices or switching on and off the airplane mode. But considering the magnitude of the outage, then it must have been at the backend infrastructure of Jio. The rise in complaints has yet to diminish, and customers hope that things will be addressed soon and further action taken to curb future interference in travel.
