The legendary Suzuki Hayabusa has proven its timeless popularity in India once again with its highest annual sales recorded during financial year 2026.
Based on industry statistics, Suzuki Motorcycle India has sold 543 units of the flagship superbike in FY26 as compared to the 511 units registered in the last financial year.
This achievement is after the model was hit by a massive price hike after the introduction of amended GST standards in September 2025, which increased the taxes on the two-wheelers with engines of more than 350cc.
The Hayabusa with its strong 1,340cc motor giving about 190 horsepower has long been popular with the enthusiasts in the high-performance market. Its sales data highlight its sustenance in the 1,000-1,600cc segment, where it took almost half of the total number sold.
The total 1,000-1,600cc, in turn, hit an all-time high of 1,105 units in FY26, and this is a positive 22 per cent increase over the prior year, and higher than the prior high of 939 units in FY2022.
The Hayabusa was also declared the leader in this segment in the fourth consecutive year, albeit the market share decreased by a few percent, 57 percent in FY25 to 49 percent this year, largely owing to the increased on-road prices.
The momentum of the sales during the first half of the fiscal year was very high, 324 units were shipped. Nevertheless, the second half witnessed a 32% reduction to 219 units, which correlates with the revision of the GST that increased the price tag of the bike by about Rs 1.16 lakh.
This headwind notwithstanding, the entire performance indicates the strength of demand of high-end superbikes in India where an increasing number of riders are attracted to the combination of power, engineering quality, and mythical status of the Hayabusa.
The cumulative total of the sales of the Hayabusa motorcycles in the Indian market adds up to 2,943 motorcycles since its launch in the Indian market as a fully imported motorcycle, then the Indian assembly started in the Indian market. This number makes the model one of the most successful large capacity bikes in the history of the country.
Analysts in the industry cite a number of reasons why the Hayabusa has remained popular. Its status as a king of the roads can be traced back to decades of motorsport history, and a design that has developed but still has key parts that are loved by enthusiasts. With an ever-growing number of luxury products on the market offered by other competitors, the Hayabusa still has its performance merits and brand loyalty.
One of the senior industry observers said that the Hayabusa has been a superbike standard in the world. Its sales growth despite its high prices indicates that Indian customers willing to buy an icon are ready to pay.
The price change in GST 2.0 did not only impact the Hayabusa but the whole high-end segment. There is however an overall growth in the segment which would indicate that there is an increasing demand on high-displacement motorcycles, this could be due to the growing disposable incomes of urban professionals as well as maturity in the two-wheeler market.
Suzuki Motorcycle India has not officially commented on the sales figures, but the figures are in line with the overall trends reported by the company. The company registered both domestic and export dispatches in March 2026 which will add to its performance within a year.
Moving forward, there is concern under how continued sensitivity of prices could drive future demand. Accessibility may also become an issue to some potential buyers since the Hayabusa is currently priced at much higher rates than that of the previous price (on-road in major cities) of around Rs 18 lakh. Nevertheless, it is performing well in the first half, which means that its core enthusiasts are loyal.
The success of the model is also a positive comment on the strategy of Suzuki in the Indian high-end market. The company has been able to strike a better balance between quality, price (before the GST increase) and availability compared to some of its fully imported competitors by providing a locally assembled version.
To a great number of riders, the Hayabusa is not just a means of transportation. It represents a performance and passion way of life. The bike has become a part of the cultural presence in the Indian superbike community, with club meets, track days and long-distance tours often showcasing the distinctive silhouette of the bike.
With the changing landscape of the automotive industry, where the electrification of the automobile is being discussed, the internal combustion power of the Hayabusa remains to amaze the traditionalists.
The result of this record year will be whether the large capacity motorcycles in India will initiate a new growth cycle or mark the peak in the face of the economic pressures will depend on the overall market conditions in the next fiscal year.
In the meantime, however, Suzuki Hayabusa has once again demonstrated why it continues to be one of the most worshipped brands in the 1,000-1,600cc market. Its recent sales success is another chapter in a story that started decades ago and is not likely to come to an end.
